Spring 2020
Artist Statement
My family is from Eastern Europe. I have never known how to speak on my family history or where exactly we came from.
I came to find out my family didn’t either.

Through this body of work, I explore the general history of Eastern Europe and some of my own family ties to the cultures
and events there. These eight posters and walkthrough booklet featuring family photos, recipes, and anecdotes tie together
the journey I took to discover my family history with my passion for contemporary graphic design.

This project is inspired by Type Hike’s NPS 100, a collaborative poster series organized by David Rygiol and James Walker
meant to bring awareness to national parks. My poster series is also influenced by graphic designers in Europe
such as Peter Bil’ak, Jiri Mocek, Kokoro et Moi, Amer Karic, and Michael Spitz among others.

Subjects covered include the countries that made up the former Yugoslavia; Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia. The Czech Republic and Poland. These vector-based designs are a take on the classic vintage travel poster and aim to give these smaller countries identity. The publication includes infographics and information for each country as well as family photos, recipes, and stories that guided this study.
As a designer, I feel it is my goal is to make messages easily conveyed and create visual identities that
help brands use their voice. In this case, I aim to communicate my family history and help others
understand a little bit more about other cultures.
